Two pitchers, two bowls
Two pair of hands
of the pastor and the proconsul

Metaphorical markers of a life well spent

Water poured ritually from pitcher to bowl
hear it clatter and swirl

Close your eyes, feel the liquid on your skin
as you are preacher or Pilate

One dips his hands into the living water
rests them on His head in blessing, a sacrament

The counterpart cups his hands in the deep
washes his hands of him
gives the Son over to the mob,
in verdict and fulfillment
