Before I was Born by Raymond A. Foss

Called to your grace
your love, your service
before I was born,
so I am Lord, your servant
willfully disobeying,
dragging my feet
relying on the world, self
Turning to you, your knock
your calling to the door
the doorway of my heart
Hearing that long ago calling
nascent within me,
that seed planted in the world

The story of the faithful
growing out of that seed,
your son, example and witness
to your love for the world,
all your willful children
offering open arms,
loving rest in the end
for those who heed
the calling from
before we were born
the calling of our hearts,
your still small voice
speaking from within us
