A New Year Begun by Raymond A. Foss

This day, a new year begun
Advent, the season of waiting
slowing our pace, even amid the holiday bustle
starting anew, centering us
on the light, coming into the world
waiting with anticipation, reminding us
the birth of our savior, his promise to come
to return, at a time of the father’s choosing
to set us free.
A new year begun, in a sanctuary colored in red, in green
in gold, in purple, readied for the coming child
the king come to earth, the son sacrificed
the gift of the father, to return in glory
waiting, watching, ready, we hope
for that day unknown, known to God alone
when our world will end
and his reign is at hand
