To the Humble Shepherds by Raymond A. Foss

The angels proclaimed
Advent, the coming of the Christ-child
that Christmas night so long ago
singing in the heavens
to the humble shepherds alone
All of the heavenly host
singing hallelujahs into the night
to the workers in the field

Not to the royalty,
the wealthy or the priests
to the lowly shepherds,
with their animals out in the fields
They went, in joy
to the stable
to his humble manger bed
the fulfillment of prophecy
the child in our midst
