Slowing down
though I had to go
a game in the dining room
cribbage begun

Tentative turns
picking my cards
in my uncertain hands
counting in the way of the game

Watching the pegs race
around the board
in leaps and groans
one by one

Stopping to go,
the game half-played
wondering how
it all came out

on cribbage game
started in Claremont
at 3:40 yesterday,
when I was leaving at 4:00
