The snap of the branches underfoot
watching where I walk
the path refracting the light
the mica reflecting the sun beams
the granite crumbling
the rocks hewn by the winds
grabbing a hold of the birch
to steady my steps on the ground
oak leaves and white pine needles
giving to balsam and cedar
scrub more as I climb higher
junipers, granite outcroppings
lichen and moss in their lee
huddled against the wind
when I reach the summit again
