Something elemental
the same as universal rights
those endowed by our creator
not given by mankind
The same as these rights
the responsibility, commandments
to care for our neighbors
the strangers in our midst
God clear on this
not to glean the whole field
to leave something for the others
the least, the last, the lost
Christ even clearer
to love our neighbors
to stand with them
in their time of struggle
To love them as ourselves
not to be greedy
to be generous in our dealings
and to forgive our fellows
while we walk this earth
To care for our neighbors
our sisters and our brothers
something God to Cain
at the beginning of the story
long before the law
the concept of connection
our responsibility engraved
on the tablets of our hearts
